Easy to Make Linen Heart Decorations

Handmade garland of linen hearts in pink and green hanging on a wooden dresser in a cottage setting.

If you love a small sewing project every now and then, these little hanging linen hearts are a great way to use up scraps of fabric and they are quick and easy to make.

I have used a sewing machine but you could hand sew them if you would like a slower, more contemplative practice. I have cut out motifs with pinking shears and sewn them on the heart shapes but you could be experimental and do some embroidery on them if you prefer, or leave them simple.

Why not fill them with dried lavender instead of stuffing and give them as gifts? There are no limits, let your creativity take over!

The great thing about them is that creating a unique design for each decoration just increases the charm of the overall look.

Materials and tools needed for making linen heart shaped decorations laid out on a wooden box.

Instructions

  1. Using pinking shears and the template provided above, cut out one heart shape as the front of each decoration.

  2. You can now embellish these heart shapes by sewing on any motifs or extra pieces of fabric as desired.

  3. If you'd like to have a sewn in hanging loop pin your ribbon or string loop in place on the wrong side of the fabric.

  4. Pin the fabric for the back of the decoration to the cut out heart shape with the right sides of the fabric facing outwards. Sew around the edges of the heart shape leaving a minimum of 5mm of pinked edges round the edge. Leave a gap in the side of approximately 4cm so that you can fill the decoration with stuffing.

  5. Now cut round the heart shape with pinking shears so that the back fabric is cut to match the front heart shape. I found this the quickest, neatest way to make the heart shape match on the back and front.

  6. When you have filled it with stuffing, sew up the gap.

  7. You should now have a finished decoration. If you wish you can use embroidery stitches or sew on beads or buttons to further embellish it.

  8. I made little wire jump rings which I pushed through the linen in order to thread ribbon through but this is optional as you may prefer to sew the ribbon in (as above instructions).

Let me know how it goes.

Happy sewing!
